Since the first years of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome pandemic, those patients
presented severe complications of invasive pneumococcal disease, such as recurrent
exudative pleural effusion, pyopneumothorax, purpura fulminans, mediastinitis with
chest wall abscess, and multiple brain abscesses.

After the introduction of antiretroviral therapy and vaccination, these manifestations
have diminished. However, the human immunodeficiency virus–infected population persists
in higher risk.
