CME The Foundation Role of Beta Blockers Across the Cardiovascular Disease Spectrum: A Year 2009 Update
Presenters: Henry R. Black, MD, Barry H. Greenberg, MD, and Michael A. Weber, MD

As the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) continues to increase, it is critical for clinicians to be informed on advances in the management of CVD and its risk factors. As a class, beta blockers have proven effective in the management of hypertension and heart failure but may be underutilized, in part, due to concerns about tolerability. It is clear, however, that the newer vasodilatory, cardioselective beta blockers provide efficacy across the spectrum of CVD while lacking the adverse side-effect profile of the older, nonvasodilatory agents. It is the aim of this interactive CME program to evaluate the evidence and define the role of these newer agents while examining the implication of their use to improve outcomes.

CME Managing Gout in the Primary Care Setting: What You and Your Patients Need to Know
Presenters: Paul Doghramji, MD, FAAFP, N. Lawrence Edwards, MD, and Joan McTigue, MS, PA-C

In light of the fact that 70% of gout patients are managed in a primary care office setting, it is critical that healthcare professionals understand how to diagnose, manage, and effectively communicate with their patients about the disease and the importance of appropriate management. It is the aim of this CE activity to provide information that will assist health care providers to overcome obstacles and improve clinical outcomes for their patients with gout. Specifically, information will be provided on differential diagnosis, when and how to treat (including recognizing conditions that will promote or indicate progression), the proper use of existing medications to treat acute and chronic gout, how to communicate with and educate patients to maximize patient adherence, promote lifestyle changes and effective monitoring, and recent advances in the understanding of gout and its treatment.
